Pre waxing advice - getting the most from your male waxing treatment

Whilst male waxing aftercare has always been something I am very passionate about and I always offer all my clients the best possible aftercare advice; both verbal instructions during the appointment and written guidelines to take away but also access to suitable skin care products that should help to maintain the skin after waxing and help to reduce any irritation or reaction and ultimately to avoid ingrown hairs.

So it makes sense to offer pre waxing advice to new clients and more importantly the wax virgins!!

Unlike our female counterparts we often don’t know very much about the preparation before we carry out a waxing treatment or the general do and don’t prior to having a male waxing treatment.

Of course some clients are great and they go off research and read articles and advice that other therapists and salons offer but some guys don’t and they turn up with hair that’s been shaved or removed using a hair removal cream fairly recently or turn up for a full body wax the day before a holiday in the sun... so heres hoping that some of my new clients will find this pre waxing information is as useful as the male waxing aftercare guidelines that we provide.

1.       Plan in advance; if you are intending to go off on a beach holiday, or you are getting married and off on a luxury honeymoon, or you are running the London marathon the next day then you need to allow enough time for your skin to settle before you do anything that can potentially cause irritation to the freshly waxed skin like excess sweat, heat, sun.. So book in advance!

2.       Make sure that waxing works for you... If you are planning an important occasion and you want to look like the smoothest peach on the beach, I recommend that you try out a waxing treatment in advance so that you can see how it goes and how well you cope with your aftercare and if you do get any reaction on the skin then its best to have enough time to follow your aftercare. Ideally book your first waxing appointment that allows you enough time for the hair regrowth to be sufficient for removal again (5-6 weeks later) and the second appointment should be booked a few days before the big event so it’s all settled and you are ready to go.

3.       Step away from Mr Bic razor or the can of Veet!.. If you have been using hair removal creams or if you have been shaving then please allow at LEAST four weeks between this and having your waxing treatment. I speak from experience... It really hurts!!.  I get lots of new clients that arrive for their first waxing appointment and sometimes they have had a shave within a few weeks or even days. Shaved hair is much stronger and when waxed if it’s still quite short its quite painful and in a lot of cases you don’t get a smooth waxing treatment when you have been shaving and it can take a few waxes to get it all back on track and get a nice smooth finish, so all in all it pays to wait until it’s all grown through properly. If it’s your first male intimatewaxing treatment and you have shaved the hair in this area within a short period of time then it’s more than likely to be very uncomfortable and you will leave thinking that’s what waxing is like when the fact is that it’s not the case. A good experienced waxing therapist will cause a little discomfort but not pain!

4.       If you are a gym bunny or you do lots of sports, running, jogging  or regular swimming in chlorinated pools then you will need to plan so that you do all these activities prior to your waxing as we strongly recommend that you avoid doing these sports or anything that will cause excess sweat on the skin just after your waxing. Sweat and freshly waxed skin are never a good combination so do as much as you can to keep clean, dry and cool after your male waxing treatments.  We advice that you take a 48 hour break after your first wax and then see how your skin has settled before you return to your routine. I have seen too many clients that have had bad reactions because they ignored this advice so please plan sensibly.

5.       Exfoliate!... As well as exfoliating after your male waxing treatment we strongly recommend that clients exfoliate prior to your waxing. It’s great for getting rid of dead skin cells and it will also help to “lift” the hairs so this will make the waxing treatment easier and much more comfortable for you. I retail my own exfoliating wash cloth A Bit of Rough, we sell these as a retail item as part of our male waxing aftercare and you can also order online at www.abitofrough.com . Whichever methods you prefer just gently exfoliate a few times leading up to your waxing appointment.

6.       On the day!!... Okay I find that drinking too much caffeine can make a difference and it seems to heighten your sensitivity. I have discussed this with lots of regular clients that drink lots of caffeine drinks and they have made a change to their habits and most have noticed the difference so that’s one option.  If you have very sensitive skin some clients have benefited from taking anti histamine which can help the skin settle after waxing and by having taken it prior to your appointment it can minimise the reaction on the skin. I do need to state that I am not able to administer any medication and you should check with your GP or pharmacist that it’s okay for you to take these. Arrive on time , If it’s your first ever waxing appointment you may feel slightly nervous and rushing for an appointment may result in hot sweaty skin so arrive on time and your skin will be like yourself cool and calm!.Finally I recommend that clients bring a clean item of loose clothing to wear after your waxing, either a clean cotton t shirt, loose boxer shorts etc, just allow the skin to remain cool after your male waxing treatment .
